FILM FESTIVAL WRITERS 2024

OVERVIEW

The Minikino Hybrid Internship for Film Festival Writers began as an annual educational event in 2021. This year’s fourth edition runs from March 26 to September 26, 2024, with online activities from March 26 to September 10, 2024, and in-person activities during the 10th edition of Minikino Film Week, Bali International Short Film Festival, from September 10 to 26, 2024.

This program is designed to broaden youths’ horizons and connect them with both Indonesian and international filmmakers, as well as professionals from the short film industry.

We extend our deepest gratitude to this year’s guest speakers: Hawa Essuman, Lauma Kauditze, Thaiddhi, Chaerin Im, Mantė Valiūnaitė, Hélène Ouvrard, Oktania Hamdani, Edo Wulia, Lulu Ratna, and Bintang Panglima.

Selected candidates will be invited for an online interview. Early application is highly appreciated. Results will be notified by March 14th, 2024.

PROVISIONS FOR SELECTED PARTICIPANTS:

  • Transportation support to attend in-person activities in Bali
  • Basic accommodation in Denpasar related to MFW10 (MASH Denpasar bunk bed, shared room).
  • Simple cooking facilities are available.
  • Food voucher during MFW10 attendance.
  • All other incidentals and personal expenses should be covered by the participants.
  • Selected Participants are requested to get their own travel/ health insurance.
  • Selected Participants must be 19-25 years old, in good health, and have sufficient proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia language.

PARTICIPANTS

FAIZA LAYALIA

Surabaya, Indonesia

Faiza is currently studying Communication Science at Airlangga University, Surabaya. She has a keen interest in media studies, music, and film criticism. Actively involved in the local film scene, she also writes for alternative media.

CYNTHIA SYUKUR PURWANTO

Bandung, Indonesia

Cynthia is an International Relations student in Parahyangan Catholic University. Cynthia studies International Relations at Parahyangan Catholic University. A film enthusiast and writer, she coordinates the Film and Literature Analytical division at KSMPMI, where she writes articles about film and books and connects it to International Relations issues.

GREGORIUS GABRIEL KOHAR

Busan, South Korea

A film graduate from Kyungsung University, Busan, Greg works as a freelance filmmaker and is interested in film criticism. He served as a Cinephile Jury at the 28th Busan International Film Festival and creates video essays on YouTube. Currently, he is working on his next short film in Seoul.

ELVATARA KHALISHAH

Jakarta, Indonesia

Tara studies cinema at the Jakarta Institute of Arts. She has produced short films and writes about social movements, focusing on gender equality. Now, she explores the context and narratives in film viewing.

HAWA ESSUMAN

Nairobi, Kenya

Hawa is a writer and director. She began by directing theatre and TV drama. She co-directed the documentary SILAS, which premiered at TIFF. She also directed SOUL BOY that had a triple premiere at Göteburg Film Festival, Berlinale and IFFR. It can currently be seen on Netflix.

LAUMA KAUDZĪTE

Latvia

Parallel to being the managing director of Short Film Conference, the only international organization seeking to unite the global short film community, Lauma is also coordinator of European Short Pitch, as well as the short film programme manager at Riga International Film Festival. She serves as a jury member in different festivals, and takes part of several selection committees like European Short Pitch and Baltic Pitching Forum. Additionally, Lauma is a coordinator at Latvian Animation Association and manages industry events in 2ANNAS – short film festival in Latvia.

THAIDDHI

Myanmar

Thaiddhi is a Filmmaker, Producer, and also Film Programmer. He studies Filmmaking at FAMU in the Czech Republic for 3 years master’s degree program in Cinema and Digital Media. His first short film “Awake” won Best Short Film at FAMU Fest 2009. He co-founded Wathann Film Festival in 2011 and worked as a Programmer for the festival. In 2013 he founded Third Floor Film Production to produce Myanmar Independent short films and documentary films. He produced a short film Cobalt Blue (2019) by Aung Phyoe which was selected for the Pardi di Domani International Competition at the 72nd Locarno Film Festival. He also worked as a Cinematographer in the recent film Money Has Four Legs (2020) by Maung Sun, which premiered at New Currents (Busan International Film Festival 2020).

CHAERIN IM

Seoul, South Korea

Chaerin is an experimental filmmaker from South Korea. With the use of craftsmanship and distinctive materials, she explores gender issues and sexual imagery. By combining and experimenting with analog and digital print techniques, she makes new visual languages that challenge conventional norms of gender and sex. Her films have competed in widely-known festivals such as Annecy, Ann Arbor, Animafest Zagreb, DOK Leipzig, Vienna Shorts, Ottawa, and Slamdance. She has received multiple prestigious grants, such as GLAS, BIAF, and SBA grants. Her work was also supported by the Open Workshop residency in Denmark. She graduated from Seoul National University’s Visual Communication Design BFA program (2017) and earned an MFA degree from the CalArts Experimental Animation MFA program (2020).

MANTĖ VALIŪNAITĖ

Lithuania

Mante is a co-founder film publishing company “Taip toliau”, which distributes films from Africa, Asia and South America in Lithuania. She also works as a programmer at Vilnius Short Film Festival. She is currently studying PhD at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Her research is focused on hybrid cinema. Mante was an Artistic Director at Vilnius International Film Festival “Kino pavasaris.” She has worked as a programmer at International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival “Inconvenient Films”. Mante curated various projects in NGO “Meno avilys”. In addition, she regularly writes for magazines “Kinas” and “7 Days of Art”.

HÉLÈNE OUVRARD

Bali, Indonesia

Hélène is based in Southeast Asia, Helene has been involved in the development and cultural sector for 15 years. She has worked as coordinator for various cultural projects in the region, including film festival organization. She has worked as editor, translator and contributed texts for a publication on contemporary arts in Laos and articles for Minikino Film Week.

OKTANIA HAMDANI

Indonesia

Oktania Hamdani is a content creator and writer for WatchmenID with over five years of experience. Tania excels in interviewing and creative research. For the past three years, she has written extensively about film festivals in Indonesia.

EDO WULIA

Bali, Indonesia

Edo is an artist with a diverse background and over twenty years of experience as a musician/percussionist, sound engineer, visual artist, and designer. Edo grew up in Bali, where music and art are integral parts of his family life. He studied Graphic Arts at ISI Yogyakarta, Drum & Percussion at the Percussion Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, and completed training in Pre-press & Visual Design at Cambridge College, Melbourne.

LULU RATNA

Indonesia

Lulu was born and raised in Jakarta. A graduate of Anthropology from the University of Indonesia (1997) and the Graduate School of IKJ (2020), she has worked at various film festivals both within and outside Indonesia. She is the Short Film Outreach Programmer for Boemboe Organization, a lecturer in the Film Study Program at Multimedia Nusantara University, and a Program Advisor for IDFA/International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

BINTANG PANGLIMA

Indonesia

Bintang Panglima is a writer aspiring to pursue a career as a film journalist. He has a great interest in media studies, criticism, and journalism. He is also actively involved in filmmaking from time to time.
