MFW BEST SHORT FILM OF THE YEAR AWARD 2025<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

From December 2024 to May 2025, our pre-selection committee reviewed 1673 short films from 83 countries. After months of deliberation, 143 titles from 57 countries were chosen for screening and consideration in the 2025 International Competition Awards.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n

MFW NATIONAL COMPETITION AWARD 2025<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

The National Competition winners were selected from Indonesian productions featured in the festival. Eligible films must hold Bali Premiere status, with entries coming from both international submission platforms and the Indonesia Raja network.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n

BEGADANG9TAHUN FILMMAKING COMPETITION 2025<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

Begadang Filmmaking Competition challenges participants to develop their ideas, write the script, shoot, edit, and make their own music scoring. Produce and submit a short film all within a tight schedule of 34 hours.<\/p>\n

There were 53 production groups registered this year and 43 succeeded in meeting the deadline for the competition.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n

All winners (including all the Non-Monetary Award winners) also receive a free of two-week artist accommodation offer at MASH Denpasar artist residency, in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. Accommodation for 2025 Award Winners must be booked between 1 November 2025 until 30 March 2026 only.<\/p>\n

The rest of the MFW11 AWARDS is a NON-MONETARY REWARD in the form of a Certificate Of Achievement signed by the Committee, and dedicated online announcements as a PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF EXCELLENCE.<\/p>\n

The programming team and program director recommends these winners, and then given to the 2025 Jury Board members to be previewed. The festival committee has made the final decision based on the recommendations of the 2025 Jury Board deliberation meetings.<\/p>\n

The micro-story that plays out in front of their camera touches on class, communication, the limits of modern social life, and the roles we are asked to confine ourselves to playing.\u00a0 We, as audience, are first amused and seduced by the 1st-degree story while being skilfully led to ponder upon details of the characters, their social backgrounds and their interactions.<\/p><\/div>

It\u2019s really an interesting National Competition of the 11th edition of Minikino Film Week because of not just the film themes, stories and the filmmaking quality, it represents Indonesian short film as its best. From the acceptance of the son\u2019s new gender, breaking the tradition, bullying and the loss of something important, from memory, sanity to camera and land, this year\u2019s National Competition offers you the feeling of what it is like to be Indonesian. In the midst of climate change, fast pace of urbanization and social judgment, you can still feel a little bit mystical.<\/span><\/p>\n

The winning film crackles with youthful fury, urgency and determination. Graduation should be a moment of celebration and promise for the future. Instead, a monochromatic treatment of archive and contemporary footage expresses the inevitable cycle of state violence and repression spanning generations. With glacial framing delicately counterbalanced by warmth and humour, the measured direction leaves us in no doubt that self-imposed exile from family may be necessary, but it does not lead to happiness. <\/span><\/div>

This film perfectly encapsulates the vagueness of the youth\u2019s. Since grief is not always about losing someone, but the dilemma and the feeling of uncertainty itself. Similarly like the goldfishes, trapping youths in their own small compartments of plastic bags; yet never stops to break through and scream. Still are so desperate to live and to breath.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A reflection of today\u2019s youth generation finding themselves alienated within its ideal and reality, Monsoon Blue perfectly captures those feelings through its technical triumph of animation, sound and story. Encapsulated within the cramped cityscapes and polluting sound, it serves as a reminder of how trapped today\u2019s youth are in the system. Only to be juxtaposed by the fluid, beautifully hand-drawn frames and shots of goldfishes in plastic bags wishing to be free; planting a small hope that one day we could be those goldfishes swimming freely in the clear river.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Monsoon Blue captures the complications of the misunderstood youth generations of today. The way this film dive into the issue of alienation, trauma, and hope itself felt like a bleak reflection of how the youths cope with their own dreams and fear in living a life they knew they only had once. It\u2019s the conundrum between living a so-called mundane life or just swim through the stream of river, chasing the dream that seemed impossible but worth to fight for. The motion of this animation transforms how the audience saw something that\u2019s perceived as beautiful\u2013a term that is in notion with perfection, sometimes left us in awe and forget that within the beauty itself, lies tragedies and sorrow that\u2019s repressed, buried, but never forgotten. It\u2019s the precariousness of dreaming amidst the world that\u2019s slowly decomposed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This film perfectly captures the imperfections in our journey as youth, amid questions of self-reflection to encourage us to reflect on how we might find solace and overcome feelings of alienation and sadness. Monsoon Blue speaks to us to contemplate how we might view the film from many perspectives of life that we might have, it has the power to challenge our perceptions of something, creating an allure and attracting to objects, concepts, and experiences. The potential for diverse interpretations of film can serve insightful conversations, fostering a deeper understanding for one of another, even from the intimate perspective of watching short films and that is how Monsoon Blue makes a strong statement.<\/span><\/p><\/div>
