PROGRAM NOTE
Animation is a unique cinematic medium that can invite audiences into strange, evocative and fantastical worlds and stories. In collaboration with Cartoons Underground, Singapore’s leading independent animation festival, this programme showcases a collection of award-winning animated short films that have screened in past editions of the festival. Through an eclectic range of techniques (2D handdrawn, stop-motion, 3D) and storytelling approaches, these films by Singapore animation filmmakers provide a glimpse into their fantasies, worries, dreams and reflections, while seeking to push the boundaries of this artform.

Two parallel narratives run through the film: the quashing of the student’s creativity and the death of Chaos in the legend. This stop-motion film underscores the contemporary relevance of Taoist wisdom by cautioning against dogmatism and the disregard for the natural way of things.
