ARCHIVE EXHIBITIONS: LUPA LUPA INGAT

CURATOR’S NOTE
by Ahmad Fauzi, 20 March 2023

Archives Exhibition Lupa Lupa Ingat 2023 Team:
Siska Olie, Rayhan Dharmawan, Saffira Nusa Dewi, Fransiska Prihadi, Made Birus, Edo Wulia, Stanis Hollyfield, Sellyna Juliantari.

Last February 2023, my Minikino colleague, Holly, opened one of the boxes in our storage to see what was inside. He pulled out a red poster and showed it to everyone at the office. “I found an old poster from Konfiden 2004”. I immediately answer, “wow, it would be cool if we make an exhibition to commemorate National Film Month.”  It was an impulsive idea filled with enthusiasm. Alas it was said out loud and the whole office agreed it was a brilliant idea, ready to support me.

Since that day, I have been rummaging through piles of files, magazines, newspapers, VHS, and other prints that have been stored. In the initial process of selecting archives, my colleague Siska Olie and I tried to catalog Minikino’s archives by year. I got many old archive files from the early 2000s from the box marked Tintin Wulia, co-founders of Minikino. Then another pile of box files from Edo Wulia with documents as old as Tintin’s files.

In the middle of the filing process, an unexpected coincidence occurred. Lisabona Rahman brought Dr. Samsi (1952) which was recently digitized by her study group, Kelas Liarsip. Minikino Studio was also involved in providing Bahasa Indonesia transcripts and English subtitles for the digitization project.

I admire Lisa’s work in the field of archiving and developing feminist discourse in the Sekolah Pemikiran Perempuan. I was ecstatic. This gives me the opportunity to chat about archives and do a few interviews about archiving work with her (the text of my interview with Lisa can be accessed at https://minikino.org/articles/ Interview-bersama-lisabona-rahman/).

From my interview with Lisa about archives, she mentioned archive exhibitions at film festivals such as Minikino’s works to open dialogue. Let Minikino’s long journey of 21 years be interpreted openly by the public. As for the rest, we’ll see the public’s response. This is also why I don’t plan to make the exhibition something grandiose. The most important is that there are small steps to open a dialogue and build a discourse on archiving.

When I started looking into these archives, I had only been connected to Minikino for two years. I was quite amazed by how Minikino stored its archives properly.

The archives that are now displayed in the Archive Exhibition: Lupa Lupa Ingat are merely some of the many physical archives that my friends and I have selected. Due to time constraints, I believe more work needs to be done, and perhaps several exhibitions to follow.

Lastly, as an eager young curator, I would like to say happy Indonesian Film Month. There are many exciting things looking at Minikino’s long history as a short film festival, which is also part of the history of the post-Reformation national film industry. Also, as one of the oldest short film organizations that is still active and consistent in Indonesia.

How do they “talk” to one another? Sudarma – one of the kolok, does not feel that he is any different from other people with normal hearing. He is able to support his family even with minimal means. Apart from helping his parents in his daily life, Sudarma also likes tajen (cockfighting). Uniquely, he became a member of the janger Kolok dance group in Bengkala.

NANGIANG BARONG Ananta Wijaya, Dwitra Juli Ariana / Indonesia / 2006 / 15:11 // The story of the Kiadan village community in overcoming the various disasters that befell them. On a daily basis (practically) the problem could not be solved, so they resolve to a niskala (spiritual-cultural) effort, namely nunas bawos ngatur desa (asking a shaman to the four corners of the compass). As a result, they have to do the nangiang barong (revive the tapakan barong). Will they succeed?

AKU BUKAN MALING Susi Andrini, Made Suarbawa / Indonesia / 2006 / 14:26// Na’lim, a young man from the village of Pegayaman, Bali, is often suspected of being a thief, robber, or murderer.
