Thai Short Film and Video Festival special program for Minikino

A selection of old shorts by the nowadays famous Thai directors. This selection is a proof of the importance of short film festival in the decade ago (when streaming is not born) as the platform for the aspiring filmmakers.

Thai Short Film and Video Festival is turning 23 years old this year.

Programmer: Sanchai Chotirosserane

SANCHAI is currently the Deputy Director of the Film Archive (Public Organisation), Thailand. He is also one of the programmers of the Thai Short Film and Video Festival and Silent Film Festival in Thailand as well as the selection committee for the SeaShorts Award in Malaysia and the guest short film programmer for Singapore International Film Festival. This year Sanchai is Minikino Film Week 5 jury board members.

15th Thai Short Film and Video Festival: Opener

Directed by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit

Nowadays, many independent filmmakers shoot their films using an ordinary Canon camera, the lauded 5D. The filmmaker’s grandmother even has a 7D.

Nawapol started making short films and getting awarded including from Thai Short Film and Video Festival. He makes both independent cinema and mainstream film in Thailand.His first feature film 36 won New Currents award from Busan International Film Festival 2012and his second feature film Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy premiered in Venice International film Festival 2013. His work Heart Attack is produced by the successful Thai film studio Gmm Tai Hub (GTH). His works include Die Tomorrow (2017), presented in Berlin Film Festival and BNK48: Girls Don’t Cry (2018) presented in Busan International Film Festival and Rotterdam International Film Festival.


My Elephant

Director :Songyos Sugmakanan

A teacher doesn’t believe that one of her students could draw such a realistic elephant.

Songyos Sugmakanan firstly worked a script writer for TV documentaries and as an assistant TV commercial director for Phenomena, one of Thailand`s top advertising agencies, before directing a short film project titled My Elephant. His feature film directorial debut was with My Girl, for which he was honored a Best Director Award in 2003with the group of six directors who is also his classmates. His other films as the single director are Dorm (2006) and The Billionaire (2011). He also directed popular TV series Hormones (2013) and In Family We Trust (2018).


Luang Ta

Director : Parkpoom Wongpoom

A young boy discovers a reality that it not what he thought.

Parkpoom Wongpoom is a Thai filmmaker and screenwriter.His first short film, Luang Ta (Old Monk), won many award including Thai Short Film and Festival and Bangkok Film Festival in 2001and was shown at many film festivals, including the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival .With BanjongPisanthanakun, he co-directed and co-wrote the hit 2004 Thai horror film, Shutter, and the 2007 horror film, Alone. He also directed one part in horror films 4bia (2008) and Phobia 2 (2009). His first feature film as single director is Homestay (2018).


Colorblind

Tum is colorblind. One day he meets a girl who change his sight.

Bangjong Pisanthanakunis a Thai filmmaker and screenwriter. His short film Colorblind has been screened at many film festivals,including the Thai Short Film and Video Festival, Asiexpo in Lyon, France, Toronto Reel Asian.He saw early success with his first two features, Shutter (2004) and Alone (2007), both horror films that he co-directed and co-wrote with ParkpoomWongpoom. Since then he has directed films in a variety of genres, including the 2010 romantic comedy Hello Stranger,the 2013 comedy horror romance film Pee Mak which became Thailand’s highest grossing film of all timeand the 2016 romantic movie One Day.


Down the River

Director : Anucha Boonyawatana

Krit and Win are best friend. Krit, the openly gay, falls in love with Win. One day, the both go to hike with two girls and experience what challenge their friendship and intimacy.

Born in NakhonPhanom, Anucha Boonyawatana is a Thai independent film director and also founder of G-Motif Production, one of the largest video production companies in Thailand. Anucha’s thesis film DOWN THE RIVER, combination of Buddhist philosophy and Thai art and a love story of a gay couple, won Young Thai Artist Award and has been shown at several film festivals. In 2012, the short film EROTIC FRAGMENTS NO. 1, 2, 3 was screened in competition at Berlinale Shorts of the 62th Berlin International Film Festival. THE BLUE HOUR is Anucha’s first feature film, which premiered at Berlinale Panorama in 2015. In 2017, her second feature MALILA: THE FAREWELL FLOWER won Kim Jiseok Award at Busan International Film Festival.

Director :TanwarinSukkhapisit

Thai people with long time Thai democracy

Born in Korat, Thailand, actress-director Tanwarin Sukkhapisit studied at KhonKaen University and began her career starring in the television series Unreal Men but Real Women, and also works as a writer and acting coach. Her films include Insects in the Backyard (2010), It Gets Better (2012), Threesome (2014),Red Wine in the Dark Night (2015)and Gas Station (2016). Recently, she is the first transgender member of parliament of Thailand.
