S-EXPRESS 2023 NETWORKS
The S-Express Short Film Program Exchange was initiated in 2002 by Yuni Hadi (Singapore), Amir Muhammad (Malaysia), and Chalida Uabumrungjit (Thailand). Since then, S-Express has become an annual event conducted by its programmers’ network, the short film exchange programs showcased on a regional scale. Minikino joined the S-Express network in 2003, opening the doors of Indonesia’s short program distribution to neighboring countries in the Southeast Asia region. Having been a regular part of Minikino’s Monthly Screenings and Discussions for several years, the S-Exress screenings then became a part of the annual film festival, Minikino Film Week since 2015. (https://minikino.org/s-express-indonesia/)
The annual S-Express programs indeed have different meanings for each country involved and have become an important part of the history and development of short film in Southeast Asia. Thus, it remains the most important movement for short film production in Southeast Asia, boasting an increasingly significant network and still the only collaborative association in the region, seeking to connect Southeast Asia’s short film community.

INDONESIA RAJA 2023 NETWORKS
The Indonesia Raja short film exchange and distribution is an annual national collaboration in the form of Indonesian short film programming, exchange and networking between Indonesian short film programmers. Three main phases unfold yearly as follows:
1. SELECTION OF PROGRAMMERS
Selection of programmers based in areas or cities across Indonesia. This year’s 6 programmers represent the 6 areas/cities of Bali, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Jakarta Metropolitan, Jawa Barat and then Aceh & Padangpanjang as 1 program. For this year, Aceh and Padangpanjang were put together due to the low number of submissions from these two regions. The five programs emphasize the cultural wealth and diversity of the people of Indonesia.
2. SHORT FILMS PROGRAMMING
The selected programmers hold an open call for short films, inviting filmmakers from their designated area to participate in the program. Programmers then select short films among the submissions to create a programme and accompanying note.
3. PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION
All programs are prepared by and shared with the community, opening the possibility to travel to other countries. Minikino welcomes screening organizers and films festival across Indonesia interested in screening the “Indonesia Raja” program as part of their events. Indonesia Raja is an integral part of Minikino Film Week, presenting curated Indonesian short films and inviting its audience to re-read Indonesia through the lense of short film.

The narrower living space perhaps has made the credo ‘nrimo ing pandum’ become more attached to Javanese culture because of its passivity. This program presents the people who move to explore life in their habitat. In the past, the people were faced with a natural environment that required them to try to adapt to the plains, climate, weather, and vegetation. But now they have to deal with what they have created: cities, economic systems, and social structures. Javanese people bet on dynamic conditions, so that life is not just about receiving, but also seizing.
