Southeast Asia Networks

The Southeast Asia Networks (SEA Networks) takes the place of the long-running S-Express program at Minikino Film Week.

The S-Express Short Film Program Exchange remains active within this network, allowing flexibility for certain selections that may not meet the festival’s technical or regulatory requirements. The Southeast Asia Networks also opens opportunities for countries in the region without an S-Express programmer to take part, fostering connections and engagement with Southeast Asia’s short film community through Minikino Film Week.

S-Express is a Short Film Program exchange program initiated in 2002 by Yuni Hadi (Singapore), Amir Muhammad (Malaysia), and Chalida Uabumrungjit (Thailand). It is an annual short film exchange program conducted regionally in Southeast Asia. Minikino joined the S-Express network in 2003, opening the door to the distribution of Indonesian short film programs to neighboring countries in the Southeast Asian region. Programs developed for this exchange are labeled with the name of the country from which they originate. Each year, Minikino sends its S-Express: Indonesia program on a year-long tour to screenings and festivals in each participating Southeast Asian country.

The programming process is tailored to the specific circumstances of each member country. In the early years, all programmers issued direct invitations to filmmakers and/or short film producers. However, more recently, some programmers have begun accepting submissions/registrations openly in their respective countries.
