2024 GUEST PROGRAMS

Minikino Film Week wishes to break boundaries while at the same time presenting a wider cultural diversity of expressions through various forms of short film artistry.

We are aiming to inspire the artistic and cultural environment in Indonesia, as well as to stimulate the audience’s awareness about the world.

Every year Minikino Film Week collaborates on shared goals with other respectable programmers, film institutions and short film festivals from around the world.

Minikino Film Week 10 presents Guest Programs from:

Together, we aim to establish a platform for short films from Indonesia, South East Asian and the rest of the world.

UNSUNG VOICES 12, TORONTO REEL ASIAN

Past lovers, siblings, witches, community members, a daughter, and a serial liar. This 12th edition of Unsung Voices sets the place for layered characters and living stories, offering insight into the abundant experiences within the Asian diasporic communities in Canada. Unsung Voices is an annual free summer production workshop offered by the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival for first time or emerging filmmakers across Canada. The cohort embarks on a summer-long collaborative journey to see their short film idea come to life and have its premiere at Reel Asian’s festival in November.

S-EXPRESS 2024

The S-Express Short Film Program Exchange was initiated in 2002 by Yuni Hadi (Singapore),Amir Muhammad (Malaysia) and Chalida Uabumrungjit (Thailand). Since then, S-Express has become an annual event conducted by its programmers’ network, the short film exchange programs showcased on a regional scale.

Minikino joined the S-Express network in 2003, opening the doors of Indonesia’s short program distribution to neighboring countries in the Southeast Asia region. (https://minikino.org/s-express-indonesia/)

The annual S-Express programs indeed have different meanings for each country involved and have become an important part of the history and development of short film in Southeast Asia. Thus, it remains the most important movement for short film production in Southeast Asia, boasting an increasingly significant network and still the only collaborative association in the region, seeking to connect Southeast Asia’s short film community.

The program presents a lineup of the best-awarded Indonesian shorts at Minikino Film Week 9, such as ‘Bising,’ ‘Blue Poetry,’ and ‘Trashtalk,’ alongside ‘Science Around Us’ and ‘Domio Instano Extendido,’ notable for their remarkable craftsmanship in short filmmaking.

INDONESIA RAJA 2024

The Indonesia Raja is a national short film exchange and distribution. An annual national collaboration in the form of short film programming, exchange and networking between Indonesian short film programmers.

Three phases unfold yearly as follows:

SELECTION OF PROGRAMMERS

The selection of programmers is based in areas or cities across Indonesia. This years’ programmers represent the following 7 areas: Bali & Nusa Tenggara, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Jawa Tengah, Jakarta Metropolitan, Jawa Barat, Aceh, Padangpanjang. The 7 programs emphasize the cultural wealth and diversity in Indonesia.

SHORT FILMS PROGRAMMING

The selected programmers hold an open call for short films, inviting filmmakers from their designated area to participate in the program. Programmers then select short films among the submissions to create a programme and accompanying note.

PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION

All programs are prepared by and shared with the community, opening the possibility to travel to other countries. Minikino welcomes screening organizers and other film festivals across Indonesia who are interested in screening the “Indonesia Raja” program as part of their events. Indonesia Raja is an integral part of Minikino Film Week, presenting curated Indonesian short films and inviting its audience to experience Indonesia through a short film lens.

IR2024 ACEH

Cultural expressions rooted in religion have long been a source of inspiration for the artistic endeavors originating from, within, and dedicated to Aceh. Through various mediums such as oral tradition, religious sermons, and cinematic portrayals, these narratives intertwine with the essence of Acehnese identity. This program offers audiences a compelling insight into the profound impact that Acehnese filmmakers and their creations have on shaping collective consciousness and reality.

BEGADANG 8 TAHUN OFFICIAL SELECTIONS

OPEN FOR PUBLIC
The Begadang Filmmaking Competition is a national short film competition. The competition challenges participants to produce and submit their short film to the festival in less than 34 hours.
There are compulsory elements were required to be used in the film:
  • Sounds and images should not be synchronous.
  • Allowed shots: wide, extreme wide, closeup and extreme close up.
  • There must be 1 character in the story, which has a relationship with Bali

Among this year’s 71 participants, only 56 “survived” to complete their production within 34 hours. And here are the selected top 10 films.
