Programmer’s Note:
The First Water is the Body
Titled after Natalie Diaz’s 2020 poem, The First Water is the Body is a program of queer Filipino short films whose intimacies are tied to images of water and its mutability. These shorts tackle false dichotomoies queer people learn to outgrow—between love and loss, labor and exploitation, selfhood and community, submission and resistance. Quiet yet audacious, the program traces queer temporalities, mutable identities, and unrealized futures. It renders transparent the bodies that hold these invisible longings and fears, revealing how life demands us to become like water: at once life-giving and perilous, unpredictable and uncontainable.

Since its establishment in 2002, S-Express has stood as the only long-running platform dedicated to the exchange of short film programs within Southeast Asia. Over time, each annual edition has carried different meanings and functions for the participating countries, gradually becoming part of the region’s shared short film history. Across more than two decades, S-Express has developed into a key movement in the growth of short film production in Southeast Asia, building a regional network that has played a lasting role in shaping circulation, collaboration, and continuity among filmmakers and film communities.
