Developing Ideas for Your Short Film

This workshop offers a focused and collaborative space for developing short film, reels or documentaries  from initial concepts into clear storytelling directions. Rather than focusing on full scriptwriting, the program emphasizes understanding the fundamentals of storytelling and shaping ideas into strong narrative foundations.

Across two independent sessions, participants will engage in watching short films, discussion, and guided exercises to explore the core elements of storytelling in short filmmaking. Each session can be attended separately, allowing participants to join either one or both without feeling left behind.

The workshop emphasizes collective learning through discussion, film references, and peer feedback, reflecting Minikino’s long-standing practice in building short film culture through community engagement.

  • Creatives from any background who want to explore storytelling in a structured and collaborative way

The session is designed with focus on idea development that will be relevant for participants working with narrative concepts, whether in fiction or non-fiction contexts.

Format

  • 2 sessions (each session stands alone)
  • Duration: 2.5 hours per session
  • Participants may join one or both sessions
  • Each session is designed as a standalone workshop, while also complementing one another for participants who choose to join both.

Session 1 focuses on understanding the fundamentals of storytelling in short films.

Participants will be guided to recognize key film elements and basic story structures through screening, discussion, and guided exercises. The session emphasizes breaking down stories into core components (character, need, conflict, and resolution) and developing these into concise loglines.

Session 2 builds on this foundation by focusing on development and refinement.

Participants will rewrite and develop their story ideas through a collaborative session where ideas are shared, discussed, and refined collectively.

Participants may join either session independently, or both sessions for a more continuous development process.
